General notes
A very significant and rare event in the Catholic religion, trhe consecration of St. Mary's Church in its 80th year marked it becoming debt-free.

The same image appeared in both the Burnley News and Burnley Express, the Burnley News says it shows the Bishop of Salford Dr. Henshaw, preceded by Mgr. Tynan and attended by Fr. Strumble, and the Express caption reads "The Bishop proceeding to the front door on the first ocasion to bless the holy water and sprinkle the outside of the church. The Burnley Express gives a full report on 14.9.1929 p 15.

The whole event comprising sacred rituals attended only by the Bishop and his ministers, followed by a service to which the faithful were admitted lasted nearly 5 hours.

There was then a luncheon at the Assembly Rooms, where speeches were made by the Bishop, Dr. Henshaw, Monsignor Tynan, rector of St. Mary's for 18 years, and the Town Clerk on behalf of the Mayor. Thanks were given to Lady Alice Reyntiens, who was seated on the Bishop's right, descendant of the Catholic Towneley family, representing 1000 years of Catholic tradition.

The outside of the church was illuminated by 1000 lights that evening.
The church of St. Mary of the Assumption, Yorkshire Street, Burnley was built between 1846 and 1849 and is Grade II listed.
