General notes
The YMCA Young Men's Christian Association established a presence in Burnley in 1903, after local military volunteers had experienced the benefits of the organisation while at camp, settling in rooms in Sandygate in Burnley until in 1908 they took a three year lease on the property shown on Parker Lane, by Boot Street. The premises had previously been two adjoining insalubrious public houses/lodging houses the Marlborough and the Clough Springs, whose licenses were terminated in 1906. The image possibly dates from the opening of the converted building. It was hoped the new town centre premises would attract more support but the association struggled financially in Burnley. They had left these premises by 1912 and were disbanded in 1929 (Burnley News 13.4.1929 p. 16).
