Title
Clayton Laundry, Clayton Le Moors
Clayton Laundry, Clayton Le Moors
Description
The company was founded in 1904 by John Joinson, a carpenter. The first washing machines were purchased in 1905 and a boiler installed in 1906, housed in a building known as the Eagle Works. A bore-hole was sunk beneath the factory in 1911, to provide the water for the laundry. In 1922 the business became a partnership, John Joinson and Sons, comprising John Joinson and three of his sons, Thomas, John and William. He retired in 1936. Clayton Laundry continued as a family firm until 1983, expanding in to dry cleaning and acquiring other laundries in Lancashire. In 1983 the main laundry was destroyed by fire and the firm moved to new premises, but the company struggled and the laundry finally closed in 1986.
