General notes
There was a woodwork workshop in the Royal Albert where inmates worked and were taught skills such as carving.
Following the closure of the Royal Albert Hospital in 1996 Susan E Stuart, the foremost authority on the history of Gillows furniture, was invited to inspect some items that remained at the hospital. The records of the Waring and Gillow company show that the firm supplied large quantities of furniture to the hospital during the late 19th century and these were identified from the designs in the 'Estimate Sketch Books' which show the designs to be simplified (and presumably cheaper) versions of some of their more popular designs.
