General notes
Promenade station was opened on 24 March 1907 by the Midland Railway and electrified in 1908. After the decline of tourism in 1980s the station was too large, so in 1993 the local authority decided to redevelop the sea-front area and build a smaller staion closer to the town centre. Promenade Station was closed on 7 February 1994. The station building, restored to its original Midland Railway condition, won an "Access for All Design Award" in 1998 and the "Ian Allan National Railway Heritage Award" in 1999. In the building, which became an entertainment venue, was opened the Morecambe Tourist Information Centre in 1992, then in 1997 the pub-cum-restaurant The Platform and the Platform Arts Centre. Rest of the station was cleared and replaced with Morrisons, Festival Market, Apollo Cinema and a car park.
