The Hargreaves family virtually owned the coal mining industry in Burnley. Col. J. Hargreaves was High Sheriff of Lancashire for 1825. He lived in Ormerod House, having married Miss Ormerod, his elder daughter married Rev. W. Thursby, his younger General Sir J. Yorke Scarlett. This is a photograph of a portrait shown hanging over the fireplace in Ormerod House in "Images of Burnley" M. Townend, p. 53. Ormerod House had to be demolished due to subsidence in 1947, a large quantity of oak panelling was sold to the USA.
