At Monday evening 23rd May 1892 a meeting of gentlemen was held at the Midland Hotel. They founded "The Morecambe and Heysham Golf Club" and Mr. Gorton was elected Captain.

Founder and President of the Morecambe Musical Festival.

After his retirement he moved to Hereford.
In 1912 he drowned in the Wye below Quay House, near Hereford Cathedral. Buried by reverend Philip Austen Lushington in Breinton churchyard, his final resting place is marked by a Celtic cross.
