"One of the heroes of the disaster", local fishmonger Jilbert Johnson received the O.B.E. for his gallantry in response to Morecambe's White Lund Filling Factory exploding on October 1st, 1917. At the time, he was a member of the Special Police at White Lund. Johnson first gave alarm to a group of firemen, and then helped 300 women get out to safety from his section. Johnson recalls the terror in Morecambe during the catastrophe, in which "ten to eleven" people were killed.
