General notes
Photograph shows the porch of St Batholomews Parish Church, Colne. There has been a church on this site since the 12th century, although the majority of the present building dates from the 16th century. In the Lancashire: North volume of "The Buildings of England", (Clare Hartwell, 2009), the porch is described as 15th or 16th century with "a niche above the arch and an eccentric (C 18?) sundial, an elongated cube on a thin stalk, balanced on the gable". In the background can be seen the glass roof of the Grade II listed Shackleton Hall. A blue plaque on this building records that it was built in 1888 as the Church Street Co-operative Hall. It was renamed in 1949 to commemorate 50 years service to Colne Co-operative Society by Alderman J W Shackleton JP.
