General notes
The photographer was looking across Wycoller Beck to Wycoller Hall. Wycoller Hall is listed grade II*, with the earliest parts dating from 1596, with alterations during the following two centuries. The hall was the home of the Cunliffe family until the death of Henry Owen Cun;liffe in 1818. Traditionally the hall is seen as the inspiration for Ferndean Manor in Charlotte Bronte's "Jane Eyre". Wycoller also featured in the novels of Halliwell Sutcliffe. In the foreground is the Clapper Bridge. This is in a distinctive style, comprising large stone slabs supported on piers. Bentley, ("Portrait of Wycoller". 1975), ranks it as 'one of the most interesting early bridges in England'. He suggests that it originally had two slabs, supported by a central pillar, but at some time in the 19th century, the slab on the hall side was split, resulting in there being three slabs and an extra pier.
