Walking by the lake in Victoria Park, Nelson. Land for recreation grounds was purchased by Nelson Local Board from Mr Every-Clayton in 1886. Part of this area (8 acres) became Victoria Park. Further land was purchased in 1896 and then, in 1897, a third area was purchased for a boating lake. The lake can be reached from the main body of the park via a 'grotto' subway under Carr Road. Several species of bird nest on the island in the lake.
