General notes
The foundation stone for church of St Mary the Virgin was laid on the 16th June 1877 and the consecration took place on March 25th 1879. In 1909 the spire was completed and at 184 ft high it is a prominent landmark of the town. The church was declared redundant in 1989. A proposed redevelopment fell through and the church lay empty until the Heritage Trust for the North West launched an initiative to use it as a centre for traditional building crafts. The Trust has now moved to Higherford Mill and the church building has now (2019), been taken on by Open Door a furniture recycling charity.
