Built in the early 12th century, the castle is sited on a limestone outcrop above the town. The seat of the Honour of Clitheroe, it passed by marriage from the De Lacy family to Thomas Earl of Lancaster. After the 14th century the castle deteriorated and by the time of the civil wars was in a ruinous state. It was occupied by a Royalist force and following the execution of Charles I by the Lancashire militia.
