General notes
This photograph of the northern end of Waddington shows the present day Waddington Arms, originally The Sun Inn, in the foreground, the Readers House to the right and the hospital and Alms Houses in the background. The hospital and chapel for ten "necessitous widows" were built in the late seventeenth century by Robert Parker of Carleton, the son of Edward Parker of Browsholme. By 1701 there were sixteen widows living at the Hospital and by 1900 thirty widows and today there are still 24 widows housed in the Alms Houses. The new Readers house was built in 1876 to replace the old house on the fell road. The Reader was responsible for reading divine service twice a day and accompanying the widows to church.
