This is arguably one of the more impressive images taken by Buck, or others, of Stonyhurst, the home of the Shireburn family (their name is also spelt as 'Shireburne' or 'Sherburne', one of the dominant families of the Tudor and Stuart periods. Their wealth, Catholic faith and dynastic of connections placed them at the centre of English Jacobitism which cost them dearly, especially after the 1715 Rising. The estate reverted to the Welds of Dorset after the death of Mary, 8th Duchess of Norfolk, whose home this was. Thereafter it was gifted to the Jesuit College of Douai where the family's sons had been educated for generations.
