Stonyhurst College was founded in 1593 as The English College by the Society of Jesus, the Jesuits, in St. Omer then part of the Spanish Netherlands. It was founded to provide an education for English boys in the Catholic faith that was banned in England. It remained on the Continent until 1794 when, under pressure fron the French Revolution, it moved to Stonyhurst, an estate at that time owned by the Weld family. They, like several of the Shireburnes who had built Stonyhurst Hall and from whom the Hall had passed through marriage after the death of the last of the line (Mary, Duchess of Devonshire who is buried in All Hallows Church Mitton) had been students of the College in Europe. This photograph shows a comprehensive overview of the College grounds with the South Front in the foreground. This was built by the firm of Dunn and Hansom between 1877 and 1889 to replace earlier buildings of 1810. To the right front is is the Home Farm, the Jesuit gardens and Observatory. To the left of the main building is St. Peter's Church built between 1832 and 1835 and behind that the Main Entrance between the Twin Towers, part of the original Hall. To the left are the Mill and sports fields.
