General notes
Sawley Abbey was a Cistercian house originating as a daughter-house of Newminster Abbey. It existed from 1149 until its dissolution in 1536, during the reign of King Henry VIII. The abbey is a Grade I listed building and Scheduled Ancient Monument. This image shows the plan which is of uncertain origin. It would appear to have been drawn in the 19th Century and based on the remaining archaeology.
