General notes
A mace was, of course, originally a mediaeval weapon of war which came to represent power and authority. This is perhaps best seen in the House of Commons.
The mace in this image was presented in 1672 to the corporation by the Duke of Albermarle and the Outburgesses. It is 1.3 metres long and weighs 5.8 kgs. It is carried before the town Mayor on all ceremonial occasions.
