This bridge is one of the many fording places along the river Ribble. Originally spelt Eadsford. In 1648, a parliamentary army lead by Cromwell, passed twice through Clitheroe and a council of war was held at the bridge. On display at Clitheroe library is a copy of Turners painting of Cromwells army crossing the bridge.
