General notes
St Leonard's Church is the Parish Church of Downham. The present church dates from 1909-1910 when it was built to the design of Sir Mervyn McCartney at the instance of Ralph Cockayne Assheton. The tower was not demolished at this time and dates from the 15th century. When the church was rebuilt in the 20th century traces were found of what could be Saxon or Norman foundations. The patronage of the living is in the hands of the head of the Assheton family who live in the adjacent Downham Hall. Many of the decorations in the church commemorate past members of the Assheton family or were presented by parishioners.
