General notes
This photograph is of the South front of Downham Hall overlooking the village of Downham and facing Pendle Hill. Downham Hall has been the home of the Assheton family since Richard Assheton purchased the estate in 1558. A house has existed on this site since 1308 but the one portrayed in the photograph was built in Elizabethan times and has been much altered since. Evidence of the Elizabethan Hall still exists but there were substantial alterations around 1721, 1830 and 1910. George Webster added the Doric columns in 1830 and the classical porch is the work of Tom Mellor in 1910.
