Hodder Valley - Dalehead/Stocks Reservoir - Fylde Waterworks
General notes
The precise location from which Edmundson Buck captured this image is unclear, as the landscape has been altered by Stocks Reservoir. Indeed it may now be under water. However, the disposition of the discernible buildings and the lie of the land suggest the viewer is looking broadly southwards towards the site of the present dam, perhaps from around Black House. This is given further weight by the activity shown in the middle ground.
The image shows works in progress which Buck labels as being undertaken by the Fylde Waterworks. Other images powerfully suggest that this was the building of the dam on the upper Hodder that created Stocks Reservoir between 1921 and 1932. Close examination shows earth moving equipment and a number of structures used to move material to reshape the valley side. The emerging dam itself is hidden by the mist about 300 yards beyond the viaduct-like structures. All told, the image, although undated, would appear to have been created relatively early in the construction process.
