General notes
The original railway line to Chatburn opened in 1850 and terminated near the Pendle Hotel on the main road from Clitheroe. The current line and station were established west of Clitheroe Road in 1872 by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company. Initially it was the terminus on the single track line from Blackburn until 1879-80. There was, at one stage, a turntable,[2] situated east of Clitheroe road on the flat ground in the area of the existing station building.

The line was doubled up from 1872 to 1874, and work on the line onwards towards Gisburn and Hellifield began in 1874. Initially, it opened to Gisburn in June 1879 and was running to Helifield and connecting to principal routes east of the Pennines twelve months later.

The station was closed asa a result of the Beeching Report. Some of the original builds can still be seen.
