General notes
A misericord was a mediaeval invention, designed initially to support monks, who were required to stand for prolonged periods as they performed their daily offices. It allowed the user to remain standing but rest against the misericord which took at least some weight of their legs and feet. The image represents a range of beautifully carved examples cited by Simon Jenkins in his highly esteemed book, “England’s Thousand Best Churches”. He asserts that “the misericords are beautifully executed and deserve nationwide repute.” It is likely that the misericords were salvaged from the abbey, as were other elements of the church’s seating, at its dissolution.
