The caption Buck inscribed onto the slide was that this was the Abbey "School House". It is unclear as to what led to this conclusion. The Gatehouse is indeed of two storeys but it is believed that the upper floor was used as a chapel for guests and visitors to the abbey. Their accommodation was nearby (please see image ECL20131112009 / 267738 The “Ale” Staircase). Image ECL20131112005 / 267734 offers a view of the Gatehouse from the nearby railway viaduct and the commentary contains further details.
