The photo features Thomas Warwick's Revolving Tower built in 1898.
Revolving towers were a quirky fad of the late 1800s and early 1900s. A number of Britain's most popular seaside towns had their own, with an observation deck and views of the nearby landscape. Great Yarmouth (1897) Morecambe (1898),Scarborough (1898) and others, eager to capitalize on the British seaside holiday boom, sought new and exciting attractions with which to tempt eager holidaymakers.
This tower only spent four years in Morecambe and was then decontructed and taken to Cleethorpes where it stood until the outbreak of World War Two and was then demolished due to fears about the Luftwaffe using it as a navigational aid.
