Members of the Territorial Army, Liverpool 508 Squadron, levelled the spoil heaps on the site of the old Bickerstaffe Colliery. At this time the main spoil heap had already been planted with 16,000 trees, the attention was on the smaller heaps lying between the main heap and the Rainford By-pass. Mr. Coates, the County Planning Officer, launched the scheme to bring back into use 10,000 acres of this type of lost land across the County
