Built on the site of the original castle, the house was the last Royalist stronghold in Lancashire in the Civil War. In 1644 Lady Derby defied the Parliamentary siege. It withstood 2 sieges. It was partially demolished in 1925 and completely demolished in the 1960's. The remaining stable block is now residential.
