General notes
Burnley's Cattle Market was set up by the corporation in c1865, to complement the central market hall. It was reserved for the sale of livestock, animal feed and had a number of amusement booths. A number of covered holding pens to hold the animals were later constructed, which could hold hundreds of animals at a time. At times the capacity that these pens provided still wasn't enough, on a number of occasions the market spilled out on to Parker Lane and Red Lion Street.

The cattle market also hosted Burnley Fair and was home to the Gaiety theatre, which can be seen behind the stalls on the right hand side. The cattle market survived until it became home to the bus station in the 1950s.
