General notes
James Parkinson died in 1896. The shop was later used by Seth Sutcliffe and demolished in 1927. This old dwelling represents the appearance of Abbey Street at the beginning of the 19th century. The cottages had their gardens in front surrounded by a stone wall. In the course of time when Abbey Street became the principal shopping centre in Accrington, many of the gardens were built upon and the houses converted into shops; thus bringing the building line forward. The Parkinsons had the garden space flagged and was left standing back from the two adjoining shops. Eventually the front was brought out in line with the others.
