Towneley Lodge is also known as Hanbrig (Handbridge) Castle. This name derives from a bridge over the river Calder, where this entrance to Towneley Hall is now situated.

It was constructed in 1797-98 by Charles Towneley. It was designed to impress any visitors on their approach to the hall. Unfortunately, the attached house fell in disrepair and had to be demolished by Burnley Corporation after they had purchased it as part of the Towneley estate.
