The Pudsey family were the owners of the Bolton-by-Bowland demesne and lived in Bolton Hall for many generations. Many are buried in the local church. One of their number, Sir Ralph Pudsey, is reputed to have leapt from this promontory into the river Ribble in the 15th Century.
