General notes
Batty Wife cave was thought to be the source of the river Ribble at the head of the beautiful Ribblesdale valley. The stream, which contributes to the establishment of the Ribble, wells up at the entrance to the cave.
Batty Wife Beck appears from the photograph to be a marshy area to the south of the Ribble head viaduct. It is no longer identifiable. However there was a description by the well- known Yorkshire historian Harry Speight in 1892. A Batty Wife Hole, he said, was a ring of stones on his walk down the south side of Whernside near Winterscales. Archaeologists have searched and failed to find it.
