General notes
Hammerton Hall, a Grade 2 listed building, viewed from the West Bank of the River Hodder, to the north of Slaidburn. The Hall was built around the mid 17th century on the site of a much earlier building some of which was incorporated into the new hall. It is built in the Elizabethan E shape style with later additions. Now divided into two dwellings it serves as a farm. The de Hammerton family were a wealthy mediaeval family that lost their considerable wealth when Sir Steven joined the Pilgrimage of Grace and was hanged in 1536. The earlier house was mentioned in Domesday and was thought to have a Pele tower.
User Comment:
'Visited Hamerton Hall in mid 2000s.We where so welcomed by the family living there, they had all the history on our family in folders to show us.
As we live in New Zealand it was a memorable trip, also going to Hellifeild Peel.' 04/10/2023.
