General notes
Whittaker’s 1884 “Handbook of Whalley” identifies one of the line of cottages just off The Sands, close to the North West Gateway, as a remnant of the Abbey’s Guesthouse in which the so-called “Whalley Ale Staircase” is a surviving feature. The guesthouse itself was demolished but elements of the original building seem to have been used on the site to construct the current row of cottages. The staircase runs from the ground floor to a half-landing towards the sleeping accommodation. The cottage – one of the “Whalley Gatehouses” - is Grade II listed.
