General notes
This photograph of the North Western Gatehouse to Whalley Abbey was clearly taken from the railway viaduct known locally as the Whalley Arches. The Gatehouse was sited some distance away from the main Abbey Buildings. They are not visible in this image. The Sands, the lane contained by the walls leading to, and beyond, the Gatehouse, lead to the North Eastern Gateway, with the crenelated walls (dating from c. 1339) running along the right hand side of the road. Access into the main Abbey grounds was afforded by other openings, but these no longer exist.
