General notes
Whalley Abbey was a Cistercian foundation, established by monks from Stanlow Abbey in 1296. (Stanlow was founded on the banks of the River Mersey in the 1170s). Then first stone was laid by Henry de Lacy, a local magnate, June 1296 and the site was at least partly consecrated and operational by 1306. The stone for the substantial and extensive buildings was quarried from the hillside behind Read and Simonstone. (The remains of the quarries can be seen, heavily overgrown now, by the side of Whins Lane.)
This photograph is of a scale model of Whalley Abbey at the height of its powers, before its Dissolution by King Henry VIII in 1537. That same year, the last Abbot, John Paslew, was hanged for High Treason as a result of his apparent involvement in the "Pilgrimage of Grace" the previous year.
The model appears to be an accurate representation of the original. Regrettably, there is no known date or provenance for the image, and no known location for the model itself.
