General notes

St. James' Church was consecrated on the 27th September 1849. The church was named after the newly constituted district of St. James's where it was situated, which in turn had been named after the street of the same name that ran through it. The original church had seating for 559 people, but lacked a spire. This was constructed in 1868, costing £1,100.

In 1965 the church was appropriated by the local authority as it was in an area that was part of a town centre re-development programme. The services were moved to a temporary home at the church hall on Brougham Street, whilst the new church was being constructed on March Street.

The main body of the church was demolished in the 1970's to make way for a car park. The spire had a peace garden built around it, which was much loved by the local populace, who protested against any further demolition. However, in 1998 this last remaining section of the church was demolished, only a year after the new St. James' church had closed.
