General notes
Barden or Byerden Lane dates from the 15th century. It was originally an access road between Holme End and Burnley. However, locals started to use it as a thoroughfare to get to Clitheroe. The landowners, the Barcrofts, were unhappy with people using their land as a highway and closed the lane at Pendle Bridge. The lane became better maintained in the late Victorian period as industry spread development to this area of Burnley.
