In the early 1900's the corner of Red Lion Street and Manchester Road was occupied by Harry Holdsworth's Butchers shop (1870's - 1920's), and was replaced by the Savoy in 1922.

On the opposite side of Manchester Road was the Bull Hotel. This was demolished and replaced by Burton's menswear in 1932.
