General notes
Railway Street was built along with the railway station in 1848. The most prominent buildings on the street, apart from the station, were the two hotels situated at the top. These were the Adelphi and the Reindeer, which were both built in the mid-1860's. After the reduction in the frequency of rail services to the station in the 1960's, the two hotels began to suffer and both closed in the late 1990's.

There were also two streets that lead off Railway Street. Adelphi Street is obscured by the hotel, but Newcastle Street can be seen quite clearly in the centre. These were demolished in the late 1980's to make way for a retail park.
