General notes
This early photograph of Bridge Street shows the Sun Inn (left), which was housed in a building constructed in 1790. Next door were three shops, which included fruiterers, a cloggers shop and a tobacconist. The large building in the centre was James Nuttall's printers. The majority of Bridge Street was demolished in the mid 1960's as part of a town centre redevelopment project.

The street's name derives from an old bridge that once crossed the river Brun, connecting residents in the south of the settlement with the old King's Corn Mill that was located here before it was destroyed by fire in 1820's. It was then replaced by a more modern steam powered mill, which can beseen here with the writing 'Burnley School Arms Gymnasium' on it.
