General notes
The Swan Hotel is one of Burnley's oldest drinking establishments, dating from at least the early 1800's. In its early days it was used as a posting house for stage coaches running on the Manchester to Skipton route. In 1819, spare land behind the hotel was used for the construction of a town jail. The old cells survive to this day and are used as the men's' toilets. This photograph of the pub was taken before the pedestrianisation of St. James's Street.
