General notes
After the Norman Conquest the Forest of Bowland was enclosed as a Royal Preserve for the hunting of deer. In the 14th century Walter Urswyck, a Royal Forester, came to live at the Manor House built on an incline overlooking the River Hodder. Today the handsome mellowed stone building, much altered and enlarged, is the Inn at Whitewell or Whitewell Hotel. The Manor House was also the meeting place of the Swainmote Court which administered the affairs of the Forest and a market was held on what is now the forecourt.
