"Before Pateson became a photographer he had a number of careers, including those as an upholsterer, a draper and druggist assistant.

By 1853 he had become confident as a photographer and advertised his new profession as a portrait photographer at his home, in Bow Lane.

The photographs he took during his professional life have been kept in the (Harris) museum's own collection, as well as Preston Photographic Club and private owners."
