This photograph shows part of the Whittlefield Action Area in 1978. The 'Action Area' intended to improve housing and living conditions. Some of the area was also due to be knocked down to make way for the motorway.

The empty houses are on Junction Street; these were replaced by new, semi-detached houses. Whittlefield shed is on the right; this was spared as it was still home to businesses.
