General notes
We think this photograph was presented to the Library by a Mr R. Muscrop.

"The hospital building was originally an orphanage which was said to have maintained and educated 300 boys and girls. It was built between 1856 and 1864 and was financed by a fund given by Mrs. Julia Ripley in memory of her husband.

A number of public institutions were established in Lancaster in the Victorian era including Ripley Hospital, the Royal Albert Asylym and a workhouse.

Although the Ripley Hospital building no longer exists in its complete state, part of the complex is now used as Ripley St Thomas School."

From the Lancashire Museums website 24/04/2015 -
http://collections.lancsmuseums.gov.uk/.

It appears that the building is in construction which would date the image at about 1860.
