General notes
This view of Manchester Road was taken in the early 1900's. The biggest changes have been at the lower end of the road. The Bull Hotel on the right was demolished in the 1930's, and the small shops on the left were demolished in the 1920's to make way for the Savoy cinema and cafe. The larger building, closest to the camera on the right, had a major facelift c1910. In the 1908 trade directory it was Ballard & Foster's grocery shop. The business closed and the premises were purchased by the Midland Bank. Far too modest a building to house a major bank, the site was transformed in to what we can still see today.
Further up the road, although impossible to properly make out in this photograph, were two non-conformist chapels (Salem and Brunswick). These too were demolished, as the population in the centre of Burnley declined after slum clearances in the late 1920's.
