The Whittlefield entrance to the Gannow Tunnel on the Leeds - Liverpool Canal. Boathorse Lane is on the right.

A tunnel had to be constructed under the Gannow area of Burnley for the canal to pass through. There was no room for a tow path, so a tug was required to get boats from one end to the other. Horses passed over the top, using Boathorse Lane.
