General notes

In the 1920's it was decided by Burnley Corporation that a major new road was required, which would link Accrington Road with Todmorden Road. This development was known as the Sourthern Arterial Road and it involved building new roads from scratch, like New Road, and redeveloping existing routes, like the one seen here. These roads all linked together creating a major traffic route around the town centre.

This particular photograph was taken from close to where the junction with Creswick Avenue now stands, looking eastwards.
